“Sometimes miracles begin when we choose to save just one tiny life.”
One breezy afternoon, with gentle sunlight fading behind the distant hills, an elderly woman and her son were walking home after working on the nearby farm. They followed the familiar dirt road, and as they passed a small barren hill with little vegetation, an unexpected event unfolded before them.
On the open ground ahead, they spotted a dark creature lying motionless, looking like a small bear. They approached to investigate and discovered that it was a fully grown wombat. It had already passed away. Its body was cold, lifeless, and its thinning fur showed that it may have been old and weak, and the harsh cold weather had taken its life while migrating through the area.
But what shocked them even more was that the wombat’s stomach was still slightly warm. The warmth did not belong to the mother—but to another tiny life lying inside the pouch. A baby wombat was still alive, curled up helplessly in its mother’s pouch.
The woman’s heart trembled with emotion. She could not let this tiny creature die alongside its mother. She suddenly remembered the unused medical gloves she still had with her from the farm. She put them on, gently rolled the mother wombat over, carefully opened the pouch, and lifted out the tiny baby wombat, placing it into a cloth bag her son quickly handed her.
They held the baby close and hurried home. The woman wrapped it in layers of soft knitted cloth to warm its shivering body. Then she prepared a bottle of warm milk and fed it. Starving for days, the little wombat drank desperately until its stomach was full, then closed its eyes and fell asleep like a newborn infant.
Thankfully, by the next day, it was much stronger. Its eyes opened and looked around, occasionally making small sounds whenever it wanted milk. She bathed and cleaned it, then took it outside to warm under the sunlight.
The baby wombat’s charm quickly won over her grandchildren, who adored petting, holding, and playing with it. As the days passed, it grew larger and stronger, its fur thicker and softer. It became an important member of the family, a close companion who grew up alongside the two children.
It loved being stroked by the woman, loved running around the house and garden, and followed the family around the yard and farm. Many afternoons were spent playing together on the sunny grass. With each passing day, their bond grew deeper.
The happiness it brought was simple but profound. The woman silently thanked God for bringing the little wombat into their lives—along with warmth, laughter, and precious love.
